Dominic Savio Teenage Apostle Saint
Dominic Savio’s parents, Charles and Brigid Savio, were poor residents
of Castelnuovo d’Asti, a little town near Turin,
In his childhood, Dominic never gave his parents any
brother, but was always trying to bring joy to them. He loved to say his
prayers before and after meals and whenever he could even at
night. He was Altar server at only 5 years old. He served Mass with
great attention. He tried to be at Mass every day, and if there was someone else to serve, he would hear Mass from the
benches. Dominic was allowed to make his Foist
Communion when he was only seven because he had a great desire to receive Jesus
into his heart. He knew the First Communion catechism by heart, and understood
very well what The Holy Eucharist was. The evening before his First Communion,
he went to his mother and said: “Mother, tomorrow I am
receiving Jesus in Holy Communion for the first time; forgive me for anything I
have done to displease you in the past. I promise you I am going to be a much
better boy in every way”.
At ten years old, Dominic left village school in order to
study at the county school at Castelnuovo, 2 miles away from his home. Although
Dominic was not very strong physically he never missed
a day of school. It should be remembered that he had
over two miles to walk, 4 times a day, through mud, snow and cold of the winter
and through intense heat of the summer. Dominic’s life at this school could be
a model and inspiration for any boy who wants to go on to follow God and also to prepare himself for life. Right from the first
moment, he made progress in his studies. He quickly got to the top of his class
and remained getting high marks in all subjects. This was not simply because he
was clever, but because he worked very hard and came to have a great love for
his lessons. It was also because his studies were not simply for himself but
for God.
Towards the end of 1852 his
parents left Murialdo and set up house in Mondonio, a village near Castelnuovo.
Here Dominic begun his Latin and wished to become a priest. His teacher, Don
Cugliero, said about him: “Dominic was only a boy in age, but he had the sense
and judgment of a fully mature man… This is certainly an innocent boy, whose
heart and affections are already in heaven”.
In 1854, Dominic was accepted at
the Oratory (Don Bosco’s school). At here he studied
very hard and was very faithful in carrying out the school rules. He always
listened to talks and sermons with great joy as he was convinced that the Word
of God was a sure guide along the road to heaven. In order to make sure that he
understood well the rules and discipline of the school, he went to one of the
masters and asked him to help and advise him how best to be faithful to them
and to correct him if he neglected any of his duties. Dominic’s relations with
his companions showed the same wisdom. He refused to have anything to do with
those who were rowdy, disobedient and who showed little respect for the things
of God. He made friends with those who tried hard, made good use of their time
and were a source of good example and good spirit in the school. Everybody
respected him for his qualities. Dominic’s best friends,
however, were the other boys in the Company of Mary Immaculate. With
these boys he had regular meetings, and they would gather
together also for acts of devotion. Dominic was the soul of the meetings
which served to decide how best to help an active participation in the novenas
and solemn feast, how to maintain or to increase love for the Blessed Sacrament
and frequent Communion, and how to help boys who easily got into trouble and
were going astray. Dominic and several of his companions were acting as
volunteer helpers for the sick in the cholera epidemic, which occurred in
One day he heard a talk about an easy way to become a
saint. The preacher make 3 points: (1) That it is God’s will that each one
should become a saint, (2) That it is easy to become a saint, (3) That there is
a great reward waiting in heaven for those who try to become saints. This talk
penetrated deeply into Dominic’s soul. It was like a spark that set off into a
consuming blaze the love of Gad in his heart. The first advice Dominic was
given to help him to become a saint was to set out to win souls for God,
because there is no holier work in this life than to work for the good of souls
fro whom Jesus Christ shed the last drop of His Blood. Dominic grasped this
completely and often was heard to say: “How happy I
would be if only I could win all my companions for God.” He never let slip any
occasion of giving a friendly word of advice or of quietly recalling to duty
anyone who said or did anything contrary to God’s law. The whole of Dominic’s
life can be said to be an act of love for Our Lady Mary most holy. The dogma of
the Immaculate Conception was solemnly defined in
1845. Dominic had a very great desire to grasp every occasion he could do in
honor of Our Lady. He said: “I would like very much to
do something in honor of my Mother Mary; but I will have to do it quickly, as I
do not think I have much time left. It was obviously that Dominic’s life was a
continual preparation for death. For Dominic, the Company of Mary Immaculate
was a sure means of securing the protection of Our Lady at the hour of his
death.
Dominic had various physical weaknesses. Day by day his strength was decreasing. He was aware of this, and
sometimes he would say: “I must hurry up or I will be
over taken by night, while I am on the way.” By this he meant he had not much
longer to live and that he must do as much as he could before hearth caught up
with him. Dominic’s health was steadily deteriorating so he was
advised to go home for medical treatment. But
he did not want to go home; he wanted at all cost to try to keep up his studies
and his life for God at the school. He felt that if he would go home, he would
never come back. He wanted to end his days at the Oratory.
Since Dominic’s health was far from good, he finally accepted the
decision of being sent home and offered it was a
sacrifice for God. The first 4 days at home, his lost of his appetite and his
increasing cough made his parents send him to the doctor. The doctor was quite
alarmed when he examined Dominic and immediately sent him to bed. Dominic then
begged his dad to get the parish priest so he might make confession, receive
the Holy Viaticum. After that Dominic’s heart overflowed with love and there
came spontaneously to his lips: “Yes, yes, Jesus and Mary, you are my greatest
friends, now and for always. A thousand times, death rather than sin.” It was
evening March 9, 1856, Dominic said: “Merciful Jesus,
have mercy on me”, the he gave up his soul to God.
I - THÀNH LẬP :
Cha Vũ Đ́nh Trác
khi mới về làm Quản Nhiệm Cộng Đoàn Orange
năm 1992, đă nhiều lần tỏ ư muốn thành lập
một ban giúp lễ có qui củ để các Thánh Lễ
được trang nghiêm và sốt sắng. Trong một
thánh lễ cuối tuần vào Tháng 3 năm 1993, trong khi chờ
đợi tại cuối nhà thờ để tiến lên
cung thánh dâng lễ, Cha Trác nh́n thấy các em giúp lễ vác
Thánh Giá và nến chạy tới chạy lui, cười
cười nói nói, nên gọi anh Đỗ Đức Thành đến
và nói : “anh lo thành lập ngay cho tôi một ban giúp lễ, mấy
đứa trẻ này không nghiêm trang chút nào cả”. Công
tác này được tiến hành ngay để kịp ra mắt
Cộng Đoàn vào ngày lễ kính Thánh
Đôminicô Saviô mà Cha Quản Nhiệm chọn làm Quan Thầy
2 tuần sau đó. Ban giúp lễ từ nay sẽ được
gọi là Đoàn Thiếu Nhi Cung Thánh.
Việc may áo
giúp lễ tất nhiên là không làm xong được trong 2 tuần
lễ để kịp ra mắt vào ngày lễ kính Thánh Quan
Thầy. V́ thế khoảng 12 em giúp lễ hôm
đó đă mặc đồng phục, áo trắng, quần
dài đen hay xanh đậm, thắt cà vạt đỏ,
chân đi giầy đen ( không phải tennis shoes ) ; mỗi
em đeo một Thánh Giá lớn với dây đeo dài xuống
tới ngực, tay cầm nến, nghiêm trang rước Cha
Chủ Tế từ cuối nhà thờ lên cung thánh để
dâng lễ. Trong Thánh Lễ, ở phần Phụng Vụ
Thánh Thể, có phần tiến nến do toàn thể các em
trong Đoàn thực hiện rất đẹp mắt và sốt
sắng. Buổi lễ ra mắt Đoàn Thiếu Nhi Cung Thánh của
Cộng Đoàn tuy chỉ đơn sơ, nhưng cũng gây
được sự thích thú cho các em, ḷng hứng khởi
cho các tín hữu và niềm hân hoan cho Cha Quản Nhiệm và
các phụ huynh .
II - ÁO GIÚP LỄ
VÀ VẤN ĐỀ BẢO TR̀
Về bộ áo giúp lễ, chúng tôi
đă đến nhà thờ Westminster xin gặp Cha Mai Khải
Hoàn để mượn 2 chiếc áo làm mẫu, rồi
đi mua vải tại Little Saigon. Cha Quản Nhiệm Vũ
Đ́nh Trác th́ điện thoại cho ông bà Tiến thuộc Cộng
Đoàn Costa Mesa có tiệm may ở đường Bolsa để
xin may gấp với giá discount cho 15 bộ
áo của Cộng Đoàn. C̣n dây thắt lưng và
thánh giá, th́ Cha Trác đă cùng với anh Đỗ Đức Thành lên
một tiệm bán ảnh tượng tại
III -
CHƯƠNG TR̀NH HUẤN ĐỨC .
Trong thời gian Cha Vũ Đ́nh Trác làm
Quản Nhiệm , Đoàn đă tổ chức được
3 buổi huấn đức và tập dượt cho các em
do đích thân Cha Quản Nhiệm chủ tọa với sự
hiện diện của các phụ huynh. Cha Quản Nhiệm
nhắc nhở cho các em về hồng ân Chúa ban được
phụng vụ Chúa bên Bàn Thánh , nên các em
phải luôn giữ tâm hồn trong trắng, thanh sạch, biết
yêu mến Chúa Giêsu Thánh Thể. Các em cũng phải biết
vâng lời cha mẹ và nhường nhịn anh chị em .
Các em cũng được Cha Quản Nhiệm dậy từ
cách chắp tay, cầm nến, xông
hương và luôn luôn giữ im lặng và nghiêm trang trong khi
giúp lễ và giúp chầu. Sau mỗi buổi huấn
đức là phần điểm tâm nhẹ và thảo luận
với sự góp ư của các phụ huynh. Đúng ra, chúng tôi
phải tập dợt cho các em ngay tại nhà thờ;
nhưng việc book nhà thờ đă là khó, việc các phụ
huynh đưa con cái của họ tới nhà thờ cũng
là điều nan giải. Thường
th́ chúng tôi xếp các em cũ kèm các em mới để các
em tự học lấy với nhau. Một
số em mới được chúng tôi tập giúp chầu
vào mỗi chiều Thứ Ba ngay tại Bàn Thánh. Cha Vũ
Đ́nh Trác c̣n muốn chúng tôi phải tổ chức những
buổi picnic riêng cho các em TNCT, nhưng phần này chúng tôi
đă không thực hiện được v́ những lư do
phức tạp. Trong thời gian Cha Nguyện
Đăng Đệ làm Quản Nhiệm, Đoàn cũng tổ chức
được một vài buổi huấn đức.
Cuối mỗi năm vào dịp Tết
Dương Lịch, Đoàn có mua quà cho các em. Cuối năm 1998, ông Đỗ Đức Thành xin nghỉ
và bàn giao Đoàn lại cho ông Phạm Ngọc Hiển.
IV - CÁC EM GÁI
GIA NHẬP ĐOÀN TNCT
Mặc dầu Giáo Hội
đă cho phép các em gái được giúp lễ từ lâu, và
Cha Xứ La Purisima cũng nhiều lần khuyến cáo
để đoàn giúp lễ Việt Nam có cả con trai lẫn
con gái , nhưng h́nh như Cha Vũ Đ́nh Trác cũng chưa sẵn
sàng, một số phụ huynh nêu ư kiến trong các buổi
huấn đức cũng kịch liệt phản đối
; vả lại số em trai cũng khá đông nên chúng tôi
đă không tuyển mộ các em gái vào Đoàn, cho măi đến
năm 2001, dưới thời Cha Nguyễn Đăng Đệ
làm Quản Nhiệm th́ chị Lệ T́nh được ủy
thác thành lập Đoàn Nữ Thiếu Nhi Cung Thánh, trong giai
đoạn đầu phụ trách các giờ chầu và Thứ
Sáu đầu tháng. Đoàn này có chừng 10 em, áo giúp lễ
do chị Lệ T́nh mua tại Việt
